All boys undertake an array of subjects, leading to either the Common Entrance or Scholarship examinations to senior schools at 13+:
Learn moreFrom the moment the boys arrive at Sussex House they are taught by
subject specialists. Form teachers have pastoral oversight of a class
but usually only teach the class for one subject.
Academic performance is monitored in regular Assessments and
bi-annual examinations. In Year 8 there are four sets of trial
examinations.
In Year 7 a sub-set operates for those who will ultimately be sitting
Scholarship examinations. In Year 8 there is a dedicated class for
Scholarship candidates. Where necessary, individual or small group extra
tuition in main subjects can be arranged. There is no extra charge for
this.
The Registrar offers a full advisory service on the choice of senior
schools and appointments can be booked to discuss a boy’s progress and
choice of next school.
The school has an outstanding record of results of Common Entrance and
Scholarship entry to the most demanding senior schools. In any given
year around 80% of our pupils go on to Eton, King’s Wimbledon, St.
Paul’s, Westminster and Winchester. The Headmaster maintains close links
with these schools, enabling him to give detailed advice.
Major
contributory factors to these results are a talented team of teachers
(with very little turnover of staff) and small VIth forms (each
averaging 12 boys).
